In Serra da Estrela, wool grows to the rhythm of flocks that have shaped its unseen landscape for centuries, as if the land itself had learned to grow through them.

The craft of wool in Portugal spans more than eight centuries of history. There are 16 native sheep breeds, grouped into three major families according to the wool they produce: Churra, Bordaleira and Merino. Their fibers differ in thickness, length, crimp and texture, characteristics that define their potential for textile making.
Bordaleira: The Wool of the Mountain
The Bordaleira of Serra da Estrela, the region's most emblematic sheep, is adapted to high altitudes and harsh climates. Its wool reflects this environment: it is longer and thicker than Merino, yet finer and more even than Churra. The fibers have a soft crimp, volume and relative uniformity, resulting in a raw material that is both strong and pliable. This is the historic wool at the foundation of Burel.
Churra Mondegueira: The Strength of Rustic Character
The Churra Mondegueira is characterized by long, thick and less uniform fibers. A single lock contains longer, coarser and smoother fibers alongside shorter, finer and wavier ones. It may seem unruly, but its virtue lies precisely in this rustic character, giving it strength, volume and character - essential qualities for robust, long-lasting fabrics.

Wool is more than a natural resource. It is a generational dialogue between people and the land, expressed through the way sheep are raised, their diet, the climate, altitude and the animal's own nature.
Over time, mountain communities learned to recognize the differences among fibers and assign them to different types of fabric. This ancestral knowledge forms the heritage that inspires us today and that we have made it our mission to elevate. Burel is territory transformed into material.
